Margaret Page for 2nd Vice President 2018-05-16T02:16:47+00:00

INSPIRED BY

MEMBERS HELPING MEMBERS

My Name Is Margaret Page

I’d like to serve you as Toastmasters International 2nd Vice President, and I believe my unique combination of skills, experience, and commitment to service align perfectly with this position.

When I first joined Toastmasters in 2003, I was struck by the incredible diversity of members’ backgrounds, skills, and abilities. As I met members from all around the world, I realized that we share the same goals: to improve ourselves and make a positive difference in our club, family, place of work, and community. That sparked a warm glow of belonging and inspiration in me.

I was also moved by the promise and potential that Toastmasters offers our members: our achievements are limited only by how much we want to push ourselves. Toastmasters’ ability to reinforce and support personal goals by empowering people to become more effective communicators and leaders is nothing less than phenomenal. It has been deeply fulfilling to experience, support, and witness the transformative power of Toastmasters.

In the heart of this goal-oriented executive, with a long history of cooperative community building, extensive experience with personal-growth programs, and a wealth of insight into other cultures, that warm glow within soon became a burning desire to contribute more and more, and help this incredible organization expand its reach.

I believe that the secret to living is giving. Contribution makes my soul smile! And, it’s a core tenet of my daily life. Combine this with my passionate dedication to Toastmasters and you understand my desire to serve as 2nd Vice President.

Serving as your 2nd Vice President, I’ll bring a comprehensive set of highly developed skills to the table: business acumen, strategic planning skills, critical thinking, previous board experience, cultural intelligence, and the ability to bring a vision to life. These skills are fundamental to directing and protecting this great organization, and leading us forward into a bright and progressive future.

I hope you’re inspired to grant me this opportunity to serve our organization as 2nd Vice President. For more information on my suitability for this position, I invite you to keep reading.

Believe

I BELIEVE IN

One Team One Dream

As our organization continues to grow, our opportunities – and our challenges – are growing too. Perhaps now more than ever, we need strong leadership to guide us into the future together. Our leaders need to nurture a culture of cohesion and cooperation, an inspiring vision to strive for, and a fearless approach to the road ahead. Here are four strategies to accomplish these goals.

Build on the Building Blocks

Toastmaster’s rich history was forged by inspired leaders who laid a strong foundation of standards and principles, vision and possibility. They lit a torch and led our organization down the path toward a future of immense possibility.

One by one, they entrusted that torch to the next generation of leaders, and with it the responsibility to light the way for current and future members. Together, we honor their legacy by upholding our standards, committing to our values, advancing our mission, extending our reach, and serving the members of Toastmasters to the very best of our ability.

As in the past, our future success rests on our member clubs’ ability to provide great value and enhance the member experience. However, unlike the past, the needs of our clubs and members are increasingly location specific.

Clubs and members in emerging markets such as China, India, and Africa have vastly different needs than those in developed markets such as USA, Canada and Australia. As we spread across the globe, we must remain sensitive to this and agile enough to “meet them where they are.”

As we take our place on the world stage, our leaders must speak to, listen to, and accommodate an increasingly diverse audience. The changing demographics of our membership calls for a leadership team that is savvy to the nuances of our global membership, responsive to issues, and united in a vision of realizing our full potential.

In the next phase of our development, our strategies, technology, and operational efficiency will be more important than ever before. To reach and serve members around the globe, in any generation, we are compelled to stay light on our feet and heavy on initiatives, and deliver value to members at a faster pace.

With our new world headquarters in Denver, the innovative Pathways program, our enhanced infrastructure, and a global marketing strategy in development, we are well on our way. Yet, there is so much more we can do!

Values Translated into Action

We’ve been blessed with an inspired set of organizational core values: integrity, respect, service to the member, and a commitment to excellence.

However, we can’t just talk about core values or print them on a banner – we must embody them, not only at Toastmasters meetings but every single day.

To become the people we aspire to be, we need to continually ask ourselves: If I take this action, am I acting with integrity? If I behave this way, am I respecting those around me and myself? Living our values requires daily practice, and as Toastmasters, we know that practice pays off.

Modeling our core values is the essence of leadership, and instrumental in supporting our members. The more we align ourselves with our values, the more they translate into action. They become a driving force, both internally and externally, raising our levels of contribution, initiative, and ethics. And, they’re infectious! When we raise the bar for ourselves, those around us tend to follow suit.

Cultivating Strategic Alliances

Toastmasters International has a strong and widely respected reputation, and our members come from all walks of life. These untapped assets have the potential to fuel tremendous growth in the years ahead.

If we developed strategic alliances with universities, corporations, non-profits, and other organizations, our membership numbers would grow! And, if we developed a program to support members in initiating and facilitating these alliances, we would add a new dimension to their leadership skillset.

The potential for growth is truly staggering, and it’s a compelling way to encourage more members to assume leadership roles.

The Power of One Team with One Dream

The future success of Toastmasters depends on a shared vision of our organization becoming the first choice provider of experiential, high-value communication and leadership training.

There’s only way to transform this ambition into reality: by working together as one team with one dream.

Everyone has a role to play in the future of Toastmasters. We may have differing strategies on how to get there, but we all want to unlock our potential. With strong leaders, cooperative volunteers, engaged members, and a shared commitment to a compelling vision, we can take Toastmasters to new heights.

BEYOND THE TITLES, CERTIFICATES AND AWARDS

So far, you’ve reviewed my professional experience, education, and leadership skills… yet, there is so much more to me!

In my life, family comes first. It’s my greatest joy, a continual flow of opportunities to give and receive unconditional love. Ever since my twin grandsons were toddlers, I’ve taught them to protect and be kind to each other. My sense of family extends to my wonderful friends, a diverse group of people who constantly challenge me to be a better person. I cherish our deep philosophical discussions, heartfelt connections, and the many laughs we share.

Like you, I have an insatiable craving to learn more about life. I read at least a book a week; give me a good psychology, business, or personal development book and I am happy for hours.

A mover once asked why my boxes were so heavy. “Because they’re full of books!” He replied, “I prefer to experience life rather than read about it.” That was a pivotal moment for me. From that day forward, I’ve strived to balance my love of learning with a deep commitment to applying the lessons and insights I read.

I enjoy gardening, from the top of my head all the way down to my Dutch roots. (My parents immigrated to Canada after WWII.) Being Dutch also means I enjoy bike riding, licorice, being punctual, and listening to diverse ideas.

Other cultures have always fascinated me. Traveling to other countries – 30+ and counting! – has been a priceless course in the School of Life. I tend to bypass the tourist traps in favor of an authentic experience of the people, food, and traditions. Seeing the world from so many perspectives has given me an immeasurable appreciation for the unique journey of each individual.

I’m the rare person who actually likes to exercise. Twice a week I head to a wellness centre for training in pilates and core alignment, and two evenings a week I go to hot yoga classes. I also love to dance for fun. I just love how my body seems to say “thank you” during and after exercise! I believe that eating healthy and staying fit empowers our minds to make good decisions.

Core Values

As a speaker and leader, I am aware of the power of words and their capacity to focus our attention. Here are a few of my favorite quotes that reflect of our core values.

.

INTEGRITY

Wisdom is knowing the right path to take. Integrity is taking it. ~ M.H. McKee

Real integrity is doing the right thing knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not. ~ Oprah Winfrey

I will have the moral courage to make my actions consistent with my knowledge of right and wrong.

RESPECT

Become what you respect. Mirror what you admire.

Show respect even to people who don’t deserve it; not as a reflection of their character, but as a reflection of yours.

Respect is earned. Honesty is valued. Trust is gained. Loyalty is returned. Never trade respect for attention.

SERVICE TO THE MEMBERS

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others, And if you can’t help them at least don’t hurt them. ~ Dalai Lama

If serving is below you, Leadership is beyond you.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

Volunteers do not necessarily have the time but they have the heart.

Sometime it takes only one act of kindness and caring to change a life.

COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE

Excellence is not being the best; it is doing your best.

Some excel because they are destined to, most excel because they are determined to.
